Do You Know What You Want?

A goal is the vehicle you use for pursuing your needs. You need to define your goal in order to move thought intoplan of action. In order to successfully carry out a goal it needs to be the right size for you, stated in the positive, and described by your senses.

Size really does matter and one size does not fit all. Your goal is more attainable when it is small enough to fit in a wheel barrow, a pail or even a cup, maybe even a thimble. Although your aspirations can be quite mountainous to very small, it is important to divide a goal into more manageable chunks of sub goals. A smaller chunk keeps a goal precise so that it is more easily carried out. Anything larger than a wheel barrow to carry around and your goal can become less real and more daunting. Anytime you feel overwhelmed, divide your goal into smaller, more digestible chucks. The size of the goal may be for the week or the day or right at the moment.

A goal is more motivating when it is stated positively about what you do want rather than what you don’t want. Positive aim is the straight arrow that moves you directly toward something you want so that momentum can be built up to overcome inertia. Anytime you find yourself thinking or talking about what you don’t want, this is the opportunity to correct your aim and ask What Do I Want?

A goal becomes more real when it is described by your senses. Creating a scenario of what you will see, hear and feel provides important evidence of whether you are reaching our goals or not. As you state your goal, what will you see when it materializes? What will you hear? What will you feel? Knowing this can help you know when you are off track. When you can picture your goal, see it, hear it, and feel it, your goal is also more likely to be pulled into reality.

When a goal is the right size it becomes more attainable. Aiming for what you do want makes the arrow fly faster to its destination. Describing the goal with your senses gives you clarity on what you really want.
